Godless Schools

I think our forefathers “hit the naireligion-schoolsl on the head,” by using religion to teach morals and better educate our population.  A Noah Feldman article describes how religion and state have not always been separate.  He talks about how religion was used as a way to increase public schooling and give the school a moral foundation.  The problem is that, you can never make everyone happy.  There is always someone in this country that feels violated or discriminated against.

However, I think that by taking religion out of public schools we have doomed our society.  Look at our morals and values as a whole in today’s world.  They are definitely not what they used to be.  I am not saying that reading the Bible in school is the answer.  But, every religion in the world has common beliefs.  Even those without religious beliefs share certain beliefs with the religious.  These shared beliefs are what need to be taught.

Our children are growing up today with no direction and no sense of societal morals and values.  The whole point of schooling is to make children better members of society and to give them knowledge.  America is letting our children down on both of these fronts.  In a Michael Moore article, he discusses how public schools are pumping out the illiterate.  They are also pumping out more and more criminals daily.  Yet, we do nothing.  The inner city schools are the ones most affected by this, and the ones most in need of help.  Not to mention all the school shootings and violence that takes place in this country.  There has to be a way to incorporate the morals and values of religion into public schooling without offending someone.

I agree with you! There has to be a way. But what is it?

I look at the private relious schools right now. And are these kids turning out any better? I want to say “yes,” mostly because I’m a product of one of those schools. BUT……that was 40 years ago, too. I look at the kids coming out of these private schools now, and I’m not so sure. They seem to be almost as bad, if not worse then the public school kids. They just hide behind their religion.

But I do think that the education system today needs to lighten up on their “no religion” policy. If someone wants to pray, then let them. If someone wants to celebrate “Christmas” then, okay! By banning anything and everything religious…..it is just making it worse. Kids think that religious beliefs are bad, now……..because they are not allowed to express them anymore.

I do think that schools and parents need to be more responsible with teaching children how to be a “good” person. I don’t necessarily think that it all comes from religion, even though without it, it’s definitely harder. But most kids don’t have any sense of morality or societal values, because their homelife doesn’t have it. Anything goes these days………and parents are not upholding their end of the bargain. We have to teach a basic moral foundation at home, in order for a child to maintain these beliefs throughout their lifetime.

We as parents and as members of society have to wake up. We have to start caring about our children again. We have to start caring about how they are growing up. Teach them morals! Teach them that it’s wrong to lie, cheat, steal and kill! Teach them “manners,” for heaven’s sake. (And “yes,” I just said HEAVEN!) Teach them that it’s okay to have religious beliefs and they should be proud of them.

And…we need to demand that our schools be responsible along with us. Children must be educated in more than just reading, writing and arithmetic.
